  • Practice Lead, MEP Engineer and Passivhaus Planner

I’m a multi-disciplinary engineer. I started Inside Outside Engineering in 2019, after 14 years with Max Fordham; leaving as partner and Passivhaus Lead.

I have worked across a range of sectors including housing, workplace, cultural, schools, as well as projects in developing countries.

I have deep knowledge in low energy housing design, and can guide the client through sometimes conflicting regulations. By being clear on what must be done to comply, effort and resource can be directed efficiently so we can take a little extra care to fine-tune important details.

It’s not enough to design for low energy on paper, the real goal is delivering it in operation. In my experience the best learning comes from measuring results, so wherever possible I analyse real data from my projects and use it to make the next one better.

  • Principle Building Services Engineer

Xin is a chartered engineer with proven design experience over the past 15 years across the UK, Middle East and Asia. He has a very capable technical capacity as well as rounded knowledge of building services and appreciation of other key disciplines. His experiences abroad have strengthened his ability to lead and motivate when working with international teams, providing MEP and sustainable design input across projects.

His passion is integrated design with sustainability at the heart of the building and has extensive knowledge of energy modelling, low carbon energy technologies and understands the importance of reducing energy use in buildings. Specifically with Passivhaus, UKGBC, LETI, Design for Performance (DfP) and upcoming building regulation changes in mind.

He has the confidence, curiosity and communication skills to challenge ideas. He has a diverse way of solving problems and expressing solutions across the design team. His experience of working closely alongside Architects and structures have given valuable insight and understanding into other disciplines, as well as ensuring a collaborative approach to design and coordination.

  • Sustainability Director

After completing his MEng in Building Services Engineering at Northumbria University, Joe started the graduate scheme at the world renowned multi-disciplinary architecture and engineering firm Foster + Partners. Here he played a key role in the designing of heating, cooling and ventilation systems for large global projects such as the New Cambodia International Airport and flagship Apple Stores.

Although Foster + Partners offered exposure to work on world-famous, cutting-edge schemes, after a year joe was disillusioned with the promise of sustainable design without the evidence and sought other opportunities. This is where the relationship with Bertie and Inside Outside Engineering began. Bertie’s passion for ultra-sustainable engineering design, passivhaus principles and the ability to forge close relationships with clients and other professionals within the industry was infectious.

During Joe’s last 3 years with Inside Outside Engineering, he has grown considerably as an engineer, moving into an intermediate level, and branching out into the sustainability aspects of the industry. He provides clients with robust and well-thought-out engineering solutions and consultancy services and has worked on multiple projects from private residential properties to multi-use schemes. He specialises in medium scale residential developments.

Outside of work Joe is a keen mountaineer, fell runner and cyclist and loves being outdoors in the beautiful British landscapes.
